Urban Myths About Agents

Having been in the Recruitment industry for over 30 years, we are very aware that people who have never used an Agency before (and those that have had 'bad' experiences with others in the past) can be wary of temporary employment and the 'Agency' experience: we hope to dispel some urban myths and clarify how our Organisation operates, and what you can expect from US.

Urban Myth 1

YOU CAN ONLY BE REGISTERED FOR WORK WITH ONE AGENCY AT A TIME.
WRONG!! Regardless of whether you have handed in your P45/signed a P46; signed a 'contract'; given bank/personal information to an Agency, this does NOT 'tie' you to that Agency. There are NO limits to the amount of Agencies you can Register with at any one time! We are aware that your priority is to obtain employment in your chosen field, and therefore it is in your interests to keep your options open.

Urban Myth 2

HOW MUCH DOES IT COST TO REGISTER?
NOTHING! If an Agency charges you to Register, our advice is "DON'T".

If you are registering for work with a reputable Agency such as Secretarial and Datapeople Ltd, we would be horrified to be asked this question - registration is free - being retained on our 'books' is free - we don't even charge you is Disclosure Scotland checks, etc, are required to be carried out whilst you are on assignment.

Urban Myth 3

WHAT 'CUT' DO WE TAKE FROM YOUR WAGES?
NOTHING - WE PAY YOU!! We have, quite surprisingly, had a number of people over the years who believe that when you work for an Agency we 'take money' from you for the privilege?! NOT TRUE! WE PAY YOU!! When you accept an assignment, we confirm an hourly rate of pay with you - and that is what you earn. We pay our staff weekly, and the only deductions are statutory PAYE and tax - which every employee throughout the British Isles are required to pay, regardless of temporary or permanent employment. By the same token - we do not take money off you if we have placed you in a permanent job! We are paid by out client for providing a service to them - why should you pay for the right to work?!

Urban Myth 4

I REGISTERED WITH AN AGENCY AGES AGO AND THEY'VE NEVER CONTACT ME - WASTE OF TIME!
We can only speak for ourselves regarding this issue. We advise all candidates to contact us if they haven't heard from us after one week of Registering. Communication is most definitely a 2-way street, and we encourage you not to feel as though you are being 'ignored' at any time - PICK UP THE 'PHONE! We pride ourselves in never treating you as 'just a number' - testament to that is the large number of candidates who stay with us year after year.

Urban Myth 5

IS MY HOLIDAY ALLOWANCE INCORPORATED INTO MY HOURLY RATE OF PAY?
We as a Company take a very strong stance on this issue, and buck against the trend of incorporating holiday allowance into your hourly rate - we believe that you work hard, you are entitled to holidays, and therefore we give you your full entitlement based on hours worked pro-rata. (20 days per annum based on 35 hour week pro-rata).
